Who is crazy enough to start a whiskey company from scratch, in the hills of West Virginia, in a world filled with 100-year-old Kentucky distilleries? Folks with a fiercely independent spirit, that's who. At Smooth Ambler, tradition isn't a recipe they follow. This company is literal proof of solid Appalachian know-how. That's when the hard-working, creative, and resourceful folks of West Virginia come together to make something beautiful (and damn good) that no one else thought possible. In Old Scout, curating fine whiskey sounds too fancy for their taste. But scouting for great whiskey—now that sounds fun. That's why Smooth Ambler always looks for whiskey to share, no matter where it's made. Old Scout is their family of sourced whiskeys. Old Scout Bourbon Custom is a way of turning over their curation of casks to choose from to ReserveBar. Because when they find something worthy (in Indiana, for example), they bring it home to the mountains of West Virginia, where they age and bottle it alongside the whiskey they make.
From Kati Alexander, Topflight Series Panel Member:
Smooth Ambler Distillery doesn't have a rich history or family tradition, but they don't need it to make great bourbon. Smooth Ambler is a whiskey company in the hills of West Virginia, embracing their community and resources, and proudly known for being fiercely independent. It is no surprise that our selection of their Old Scout Single Barrel Bourbon would also be unique and fiercely independent! Deep amber in color, this 6-year-old bourbon delivers delicious aromatics. Gooey caramel popcorn, apricot, leather, and candy corn with a sweet char you'd expect from oak influence. What makes this bourbon unique is what comes next. On the palate, flavors of dried lavender, clove, extra dark chocolate, sweet cigar, and savory herbs take over, leaving a medium finish and such a unique experience. The sweet and warm candied aromas followed by herbal, clove, and dried fruit flavors provide the most fun collision of the senses you must try for yourself!
